About

Hi. I'm Kate Sandhaus, formerly known as Kate Broun. I'm 32 and live in Atlanta with my husband Jay and my son Alex. We recently decided that one toddler isn't making life quite crazy enough, so now I'm pregnant with our second child, another boy, due in July 2008.

We also have a small zoo: Jarboe, a Bernese Mountain Dog, and Sally, Sabrina and Samuel, three upwardly mobile alley cats. Jay is always telling me that we're over quota in the pet department, but we disagree on this small point.

Alex was born on September 26, 2006 and is, without a doubt, the cutest baby of all time. See for yourself.

My husband Jay is a smart, loving and kind fellow. He is a professional computer nerd who builds fancy software, and manages a team of other nerds. He also makes spectacular penne vodka. He is very tall, wears signature glasses that people always compliment, and has nice reddish-brown hair. Usually we get on quite well, except when he's making me watch science fiction movies, or trying to convince me that we need a PlayStation. (Update: We now have a cockadoody PlayStation. In fact, I bought it for Jay as a birthday gift. He swore that I would grow to love the PlayStation more than life itself, but this turns out not to be true.)

I work at a large media company doing project management for web projects. There's more to say on that subject, but I don't discuss work at all on this blog because that's frowned upon by the people in charge, and I'd like to keep my job.

I was born in Kansas and lived there until I was seven. In second grade, we moved to Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. The next ten years or so were filled with Wizard of Oz jokes. Because that's what happens when you're from Kansas, in case you didn't know. I graduated from Walt Whitman High School in 1994, and the University of Notre Dame in 1998.

We spend most of our time hanging out with our son, pets and friends, and going out to eat. Jay and I are both fairly internetty, and spend way too much time surfing the web. I confess to not doing a whole lot of reading, partly because I have a short attention span and partly because we have a toddler who consumes most of our non-work hours. So I mainly read the New Yorker or People. I figure they sort of cancel one another out.

Telly favorites include Bill Maher Real Time, American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, and 60 Minutes. I also get sucked into those Dateline murder mysteries and all those Bravo and HGTV shows about flipping houses and home decor. Jay will watch absolutely anything as long as it is in HD. One time he watched Seed of Chucky, just because it looked good on the 60'' HDTV that engulfs our living room. For the record, I did not watch Seed of Chucky.

I like anything having to do with words, odd spelling and grammar, and British turns of phrase. Speaking of our accented friends, I tend to favor British pop music like Keane, Travis and Coldplay. I know very little about UNIX, but my favorite command is ls.

This web site has been around since 2001, and I go through phases of posting a lot or hardly at all. It has also been handy for reconnecting with old friends, or occasionally hearing from strangers who share my love of hiking in North Georgia or large stripey cats.

Speak your mind in the guestbook, or contact me via the online form. Toodles.
